Why Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA)?

People generally ask us once they know that we are an approved advisor of Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) funds a very simple question: Why DFA?

I often describe how my quest to provide the best investment options for my clients was the result of many years of studying in academics and working in the business world. From this research, I stumbled upon this company that does not directly sell their offerings to the public and thus, does not market themselves. However, the DFA funds would regularly appear in the rankings of mutual fund performance, often listed as a top performer.

The New York Stock ExchangeWhen I called the company to inquire if I could become an approved advisor, I was told that they would send me a questionnaire and then if they were satisfied with the responses to the questionnaire that they would set up an office visit.

I did have the office visit and then had to attend their investment seminar as well. They wanted to ensure that we would use the funds as they are intended so that the costs of running the funds would not be stressed due to improper use such as using the funds as a way to time the market movements.

We wrote a blog that describes the DFA process and benefits to investors which can be found here:  WHY DFA

In the video below, Weston Wellington, who is a Vice President at DFA and one of the firm’s in-house research experts, describes his journey to become an employee of DFA. He had a similar eye opening experience, as I did, in learning that there was a better way to provide investments to individuals than trying to predict the future movements of the markets.

Another DFA employee who works with me at DFA, describes that, for him, the attraction of DFA was never having to say sorry to a client. This statement and Weston’s story capture our journey to become and remain a DFA advisor for over 15 years. We are proud to have them as a partner.
