Today is my last first day of school and like many endings, this one is a bit hard to swallow. For the past 21 years, the first day of school has brought great joy for me as my girls headed off filled with excitement and trepidation. The ritual of taking pictures with their fingers holding the appropriate year – and their reluctance to endure this tradition as they got older – are fresh in my memory.
This year Elizabeth drove out of the driveway (no bus for her) in her senior sweater with a smile on her face. The perks of being a senior include the coveted parking spot and the true belief that the last year at IHA will be filled with good times and great memories.
It is hard to believe that 25 years can go so quickly. As I reflect back to my journey as a parent, I realize that I really didn’t have a clue as to what I was getting into. When friends and family inquire as to how I raised three daughters who have turned into wonderful adults, I am not sure that I can take the credit.
Like most journeys, there have been highs and lows and the roller coaster ride has been interesting and exciting. And if I could give one piece of advice to those who just got on the ride, it would be to relax and enjoy it. Don’t worry so much about the little stuff and know that one day you too will have a last first day of school!
I wonder what I will tell myself 25 years from now. The ability to look forward is much more difficult than looking back. I like to say that when you plan for your future and your retirement, you are an advocate for your future self.
Knowing that it may be difficult when you are on the roller coaster ride to imagine what is ahead of you, all of the twists and turns and highs and lows, planning for the future might not seem to be important at the time. But, the best advice I can give you is to have a financial advisor who will work with you along the journey with an eye toward your future needs. Acting as an advocate for your future-self.
Often people will say that if I knew then what I know now, I would have made different decisions. Engage an advisor to help you clarify how to achieve the future you and your family desire.
Looking forward is what we do best…..Let us help you enjoy your ride!
