As fall is in the air in Bergen County, New Jersey and the tri-state region, it can only mean two things: the return of football and the return of school. In this post, we want to pass along a website that we were exposed to which is quite astonishing for schoolchildren and adults of all ages.
It seems an uncle was trying to help his cousins with their schoolwork and because he was a distance from them he decided to teach them over the phone. He soon began to videotape the instructions on various topics to aid them. Well just like how a number of big things start as a small idea; this idea is turning out to be one phenomenal resource for everybody and may change the teaching profession forever.
Khan Academy (started by Salman Khan) has developed a website: Khan Academy that will be of benefit for anyone struggling with their schoolwork or even if you what to learn more about any topic that you can imagine. The topics range from algebra to art history by the decades, from microeconomics to SAT preparation. He has gotten the high praise of several major figures including Bill Gates whose foundation has provided funding along with Google.
The Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by Bengali-American educator Salman Khan, a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School. With the stated mission of “providing a high quality education to anyone, anywhere”, the website supplies a free online collection of more than 4,000 micro lectures via video tutorials stored on You Tube teaching too many topics to list.
Khan chose to avoid the standard format of a person standing by a whiteboard, deciding instead to present the learning concepts as if “popping out of a darkened universe and into one’s mind with a voice out of nowhere” in a way akin to sitting next to someone and working out a problem on a sheet of paper:
