I can remember my very first Mother’s Day. The year was 1989 and my daughter Katie (now called Kathryn) was ten months old. I spent the day with her on the playground and Dan had purchased me a dozen red roses.
I remember thinking that I needed no presents, as surely she was the greatest gift that I had ever received.
As the years have gone by, I still believe that motherhood is the greatest joy of my life. And being a mother means being the one who sees all the promise in your child, without harping on their faults.
It allows one to believe that no matter what the world throws at them, they have a champion who backs them up, lifts them up and will go to the end of the earth for them.
Powerful is an accurate description of a mother’s love.
However, that’s not to say that there have not been difficult moments while mothering. There are the days that you were convinced that you might be voted for the worst mother of the year.
But even on the most difficult of days, the love that you have for your child is unconditional and enduring. And even on the darkest days, this powerful love can make the world a better place.
In some respects, we all need to be mothered, even as we age. And although you may not have your mother with you anymore, the memories of her love can and should comfort you.
So, on this Mother’s Day, why don’t we all spread this motherly love to those around us? You never know who might need that powerful force…..and you can uplift those who need it the most. Be kind to all, and enjoy the day!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms, Aunts and great sisters!
