Celebrate Memorial Day by Honoring the Fallen Military

May 24, 2017 by Dan Crimmins Leave a Comment

Memorial Day is the official start of the summer season and usually includes a barbecue and the opening of the swimming pool!

But the main celebration of Memorial Day is to take time to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation while serving in the military. And there are some charities that work hard all year-long to provide services to the families of those who have sacrificed for our freedoms.

One great nonprofit Veterans Service Organization is called TAPS.

Statue of LibertyTAPS (Tragedy Assistance Programs for Survivors) is the 24/7 front line resource for all those grieving the death of a loved one in military service to America. TAPS provides help, hope and healing through comprehensive services and programs that include peer-based emotional support, casework assistance, community-based care, survivor seminars, children’s camps and a wide range of grief and trauma publications and resources.

Since 1994, TAPS has offered services to thousands of surviving family members. TAPS receives no government funding and all services are free of charge to the surviving family members.

Locally, TAPS holds a yearly fund-raising event at the Ridgewood Country Club in Ridgewood, NJ. There will be many military personnel and their families at the event.  Last year, they told moving stories of some of the people who have benefited from the organization. It is a community for those who have lost a loved one and it helps survivors move forward during the most difficult time in their lives. It has aided the survivors in many ways and continues to support them throughout their lives.
