50 and Fabulous!

As most of you know by now, this is a big year for Dan and me as we celebrated our 50th birthdays!  The AARP envelope came addressed to Dan a month before the big day and there was lots of jokes and laughter about the thought of being eligible for the coveted card.  Surely we would not sign up for membership (at $16 per year for a couple!).

Have we already gotten to the age of “senior discounts”? It reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry visits his parents in Florida and had to eat dinner at 5 pm to get the “early bird special”.  How is it possible that the young age of 50 is considered “retirement age”? And how the heck did we get to this age so quickly?

I decided to do a little research and much to my surprise there are many discounts available to anyone over the age of 50.  Some require you to sign up for the coveted AARP card, but there are also many establishments that offer the discounts to anyone over the age of 50.

Here are a few interesting discounts that are available with your AARP card and can be found at www.aarp.org.

  • Hotel rooms, car rentals and airline tickets50th Birthday
  • Dunkin Donuts-free donut with purchase of any Large or X-Large beverage
  • Geek Squad- 15% off on computer support in store or in home
  • Michael’s- 10% off on Tuesdays
  • Teleflora – 20% off everyday
  • Outback Steakhouse- 15% off on Monday thru Thursday
  • Bonefish Grill-10% off everyday
  • ADT Home Security- 10 % off
  • Kindle Fire- 10% off

Here are a few stores that give discounts for anyone over the age of 50 (no AARP card required):

  • Banana Republic- 10% off everyday
  • Modell’s Sporting Goods- 10% off everyday
  • Rite Aid- 10% off on Tuesdays and 10% off on prescriptions
  • Krispy Kreme -10% off

Be sure to ask at the checkout counter if there are any discounts.  You might be surprised to learn that you can save money, just because you have reached that “special” age.  Who knew that 50 could be so fabulous!
