Unsure What to Do?

2008-05-10 New York 016 Museum of Modern Art, Olafur Eliasson, Take Your TimeRecently I celebrated a birthday, and although it was not a major milestone, it did give me the opportunity to reflect on my life and the things that are going on around me.  It has been a year of some unsettling moments, which, at times, have left me feeling a bit lost and sad.

I was fortunate to have lunch to celebrate my birthday with a close friend who wrote the following quote in my card.

From a Chinese philosopher:

Can you be patient until the mud settles and the water is clear…..

Can you remain unmoving ‘til the right action arises by itself?

This quote can apply to many things in your life.  For me, it gives me comfort in the concept of time.  The time to reflect, the time for patience and the time to allow things to become a bit calmer, before determining  a plan of action.

We are all so use to making quick decisions without the opportunity to settle our thoughts.  We no longer give ourselves the right to slow down.  Breathe.  And ponder the many twists and turns that have gotten us to this point in time.

It is similar to investing.  The concept of time is a key component to having a successful journey.  Though the media may try to dictate that a decision needs to be made today and to scare you into making a change to your plan, the best course of action is to remain focused on the long term.  Breathe.  And keep your plan intact.

Take the time that you need …. for life and investing.  And allow yourself the patience to see things a bit clearer before making a decision that might not be in your best interest.
