As a financial planner the focus is mainly on planning for the future. And in planning for the future you need to focus on what you can control today in order to accomplish your goals. For most of us the ability to set a plan and keep focused may be difficult at times. But staying with the plan is your best course of action to assure that you are on the right path.
We live in a world where we tend to focus our attention and interests in the current moment. This can be witnessed at any major event that you attend or view on television. How often do we see those in attendance focused on recording the moment on their cell phones or tablets? And by doing this, do they miss out on the experience? Can we be so focused on reporting what we are seeing for others or social media that the event itself is ruined?
I can’t help but wonder if the inability to enjoy the moment today will have a negative effect on the how we view the future. Is the recording of an event the only way to keep a memory? Or are we so focused on showing others where we are and what we are doing at all times that our experiences take a back seat to the reporting of it?
Social media has changed the way that we perceive the world. In many ways it has allowed us to be part of all that is going on around us, whether close or far away. But, it is hard to dismiss that there isn’t a price that we pay for this inclusion.
It is easy to be distracted by what matters the most when you have many influences vying for your attention. Just like financial planning, you must focus on the present to plan for the future.
Enjoy all the moments and experiences and stay focused on what really matters the most for you and your future. And try to put the smart phone and tablet away. Make a memory that you do not need to record. You just might be surprised that you enjoyed the moment even more.
